MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN SOLAR INCENTIVES

Start With a Free Consultation

Our team of specially solar-trained representatives can take the guess work out of navigating the different tax credits, rebates, incentives, loans, and grants that might be available to you as a customer.

Live Wire Solar will research available incentives and incorporate them into a comprehensive proposal or portfolio. If the project moves ahead, we’ll proactively file for available rebates and incentives.

FEDERAL SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) INCENTIVES

Some of the most common incentives on the national level include:

  • 30% Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit: A solar PV array owner can claim a credit of 30% of qualified expenditures for their home. This is not a deduction; it is a dollar-for-dollar credit on any federal taxes owed.
  • 30% Business Energy Investment Tax Credit (ITC): A business can also claim the 30% tax credit.

MINNESOTA SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) INCENTIVES 2023

Below are some of the most common financial incentives in Minnesota, but does not include all. If you don’t see an incentive that applies to you or want to see what is available to you, contact Live Wire Solar and a solar expert will find all the financial incentives for you.

Net-Metering

Net metering is the process of buying and selling power to/from your utility’s grid. When solar is installed, a bi-directional meter replaces your existing electric meter. This buy/sell meter tracks how much energy your receive from the grid and how much you send back. The net difference is billed (or credited) to you.

Utilities are required to pay you for your excess generation, but the rate can vary from state to state and from one provider to the next. In Minnesota, all electric utilities are required to reimburse at “average retail energy rate” per state statute (272.0295), enacted in 1983. In other states, such as Wisconsin and Iowa, the rate is set by each utility, so it’s important to verify the rate paid by your utility for excess generation, and we can do that for you.

The net metering rates play a big part in designing a solar energy system that will maximize your investment while potentially allowing you to cover future electrification goals such as adding an electric vehicle, air source heat pumps, or hybrid electric water heaters to drastically reduce your gas heating.
